I have owned many a6xxx models and this one is incredible. I've paired it with the new 16-55 f/2.8G and the image quality is on par with my a7iii and a GM lens. In fact, the autofocus is better IMO. For me it's a a6500 on steriods.

Used the a6600 for 6 days and the main port stopped working for remote switch. So the camers is useless to me now and I'm now having to pay the bill to get it fixed. To fix the port the motherboard needs replacing after 6 days. Sent off to fixation in London. Could possibly be the last sony camera I buy. VERY UNHAPPY :(

Value for money👍🏾
ILCE-6600 27 March 2024 by Reggie34 (United Kingdom)
This is my first “serious” camera and for an amateur photographer it’s perfectly matches me current skill set. The best part I think is how light and portable it is. Also, I can get pretty pro-grade pictures after tweaking in-camera settings. One point though that I have struggled with is the focus settings which may be entirely due to me not fully grasping but the focus point jumps and down and has a very small focus area which can render an entire image not sharp as it has focused on a tiny part of the whole picture.

Better focus plus 'In Body Image Stabilisation'
ILCE-6600 20 June 2023 by Davec005 (United Kingdom)
Having previously owned an ILCE-(A)6300 for a few years I was reasonably familiar with the somewhat awkward menu system that has had a bit of a refresh on the A6600 but overall there isn't much of an improvement and the camera itself other than its main/key features which are the faster and more accurate auto focus, larger battery that seems to go on and on (....and on and on!) for ages compared to the smaller battery in the A6300. Also, because the battery is physically bigger, so is the grip which is much more comfortable in the hand. This newer camera also has the in body stabilisation which helps with both stills and video ....but is far from perfect and could be better! The auto focus can now be switched between human and animal eye focus which is good for animal photography which I rarely do but the option is now there for those that do. If there is a downside to this camera it would be the price compared to other makes with a similar spec but as I'm already invested in the system with a few Sony lenses plus a lot of third party alternatives, this camera is good for me plus it is a lot cheaper than a full frame Sony camera with lenses with similar specs.

ILCE-6600 21 March 2023 by Woodnt turn (United Kingdom)
Having only been using this camera for a couple of weeks now it’s heavier over my old a6000 which was a great little camera, this one is good but not great, the menu is still old and clunky, and so many options inside other options it’s been a challenge to understand this camera and still is a challenge to navigate the menus, overall the picture quality is good, haven’t managed to try the video out yet.

Good camera but some firmware issues
ILCE-6600 15 October 2021 by RonLG (United Kingdom)
The camera produces very good results and is extremely light and small. However th esmall size does mean that the range of controls is more limited than on a full size DSLR and those controls are set closer together. The sensor is extremely good and noise levels are contained up to relatively high ISO's. A major issue is the poor algorithm that is used to select a combination of aperure and shutter speed in the P setting. That renders the P setting almost unusable and I have found that best results are obtained by using the Manual mode, setting the aperure and shiutter speed appropriate to the occasion and using Auto ISO to adjust the resulting image. Unfortunately this leads to two additional defects in the firmware. As on many DSLR's aperture is adjusted using the control on top of the camera and shutter speed by a rotary dial on the camera back. While the top control is very positive and easy to use once its position is learned the same canot be said for teh rotary control on the back of the camera. That control not only rotates but can also be depressed in 4 directions and it is far too easy to depress it while adjusting the shutter speed and to accidentally move, for example, from auto ISO to a fixed ISO value. To undo this accidental change can be time consuming. Such accidental errors could be so easily avoided if the firmware required any of the four "corners" of the dial to be held for, say half a second, before the rotary dial assumed its other function. The second firware defect is that, when the exposure settings are being changed in manual mode with Auto ISO the displayed ISO selected by the camera is replaced by "AUTO" instaed of changing as, say, the Shutter speed is changed. The new ISO only appears when the shutter is half pressed. Thi sis in stark contrast to my Canon 7D Mk2 where the apropriate ISO remains live and changes in response to user changes in Aperture or Shutter speed. Both these defects lead to loss of time in selecting appropriate settings which can be the difference between taking and missing a good photograph. Because of that I have reduced my rating to only 3 stars.

Bought the 6600 to replace an old 6000. As a professional who carried heavy camera bags for decades, I needed something small but high quality for a trip to Italy. The images are so very crisp! The big surprise for me was the low light performance. Shooting in a church in Florence at ISO 3200 gave me beautiful images with almost no noise and were wonderfully sharp when viewed at 100%. I use the Zeiss 16 - 70 f4 lens.

Body + 18-135mm Zoom Lens 14 July 2021 by Chris1988 (United Kingdom)
Waited a while to get this camera for price wise, was surprised when the box turned up with how small it was and once out of the box how small the camera is in the hands. Holding it tho is really nice, fits in my hands perfectly and having the larger battery it lasts a long time shooting too. the image quality out of this camera is brilliant and the auto focus is so fast and eye AF is amazing on people and animals. Really well made, the menu system is a little confusing to someone who doesn't know anything about photography coming to this camera for a starter camera but once you get using it, you pick it up pretty quick.

First Camera!
ILCE-6600 18 February 2021 by Richie707 (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
The Sony A6600 is my first camera, a bold move I know as I could have purchased a cheaper camera. The continuous great reviews across platforms, the weight, build quality and AF are some of the many reasons I bought this model. There are a couple of designs I wish were different. The screen had multi tilt to the side. The flash was available as per previous models. As this is a new model, the megapixels could have been increased inline with other competitors such as Fuji. These certainly didn't stop my purchase, but would go along way to making the product more favourable. That being said, after all my extensive research across both DSLR and Mirrorless cameras, I still purchased the A6600 and certainly don't regret it. My only other comment is that I wish ther were more packages with different lenses available. I wanted this camera for wildlife photography and if there were other packages available with a telephoto lens, that would have been my pick.

ILCE-6600 23 November 2020 by BigFoot56 (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
This is the 9th E Mount APS-C Sony camera that I have used and it is, without doubt, the best of them. Is it perfect? No, it has some niggling flaws but none of them detract fully from the camera. Chief amongst these is the lack of a joystick which would be a really useful addition to the camera. Whilst the current methods for fixing the focal point work well (once you get used to them) a joystick is becoming the norm on cameras at this price point. Secondly, effective in camera processing is also something that one expects for a camera at this level. Thirdly, for those of us who shoot in B&W it would be nice to have other monochrome options (such as those offered by Fuji, Panasonic, Olympus). On the positive side, the focusing on this camera is class leading. The new 2.8 G master lens makes the most of that focussing capability. Add to this the image stabilisation and the weather sealing and it is clear that this line of E mount cameras has come of age and it is the first one that I would certainly recommend - I liked it enough to order a second body and so I am not certain that I can give it a stronger endorsement (despite the niggles)

ILCE-6600 04 October 2020 by Talk2bry (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
For the size of the sensor, the image quality is very good. The camera build is also very good. The features are as good as a top end camera. The handling isn’t bad, but takes a little time to get use to. The view find good, as is the image information. Cons The program menu is bit bit long winded and I’m still find it slow to change setting, although this will get better as I get use to the menu. They camera isn’t rain poof. Overall a good camera for it price Am I going to replace replace my Nikon D750 and D850 for the Sony’s cameras. I’m really not sure as it’s a lot of money to replace all the lenses on top of the camera. I purchased this camera as a try out the menu which I’m still a bit unsure about.

Great still image quality, very good even in low light, amazing auto-focus capabilities, great video capabilities. Very sturdy build. Needs a UHS-II type SD card slot or faster card type - The camera outperforms the card write speed. Still has really bad battery drain even when turned off - That's a problem from the original a6000 that still hasn't been fixed. 4/5 stars because Sony could easily fix these flaws and they should on their top of the line APS-C camera.

Ever since I've owned and used this camera, and during this Covid-19 period I am shooting about every day, I have sensor issues. Not only do I get specs on my images but I also get dark thick lines that appear on images. They are not consistent. In other words they do not appear on every image. I've cleaned the sensor (every time I finish a shoot and view my images) as well as the kit lens that came with the camera. I've cleaned this camera so much, that I have run out of cleaning swabs and have had to order more. I'm going to take this issue to the distributor where I purchased this camera. I have owned a Sony full frame camera in the past, but this camera has a problem.

Hello, we're sorry for the negative experience. Unfortunately, sensor dust on a mirrorless camera is unavoidable. We recommend a rocket blower to periodically gently blow the dust out. As far as the dark thick lines, this could be LED lighting causing this phenomena. Sometimes turning off silent shutter can mitigate this. For further troubleshooting, please give us a call at 1-239-245-6360

I bought this camera on B&H Photo Video (there is a student discount) I did about 5 months of research deciding on what to upgrade from my old a6000. It came down to 3 cameras, the a6600, the Fujifilm X-T3, and the Sony A7 mark III. After much research, hundreds of hours of youtube, rentals, borrowing lenses, etc, here are my reasons: SONY A7III (Full Frame): -In the end full frame was just too cumbersome. The weight didn't bother me at all, but the size did. I am a heavy, heavy traveler (a travel blogger). Let me tell you, I just finished a trip to 3 different continents (not including USA where I live) in the month of January. I couldn't imagine lugging around the A7III with the Tamron 28-75mm (what I would've bought) in my small/medium sized backpack; I wouldn't have room to fit anything else! In addition, the Tamron 28-75mm isn't wide enough on the 28mm end, therefore I would 1. Need to buy the Tamron 17-28mm in addition to, or 2. Need to buy the Sigma 24-70mm instead which is bigger and heavier than the Tamron 28-75mm! I've been to probably over 30 countries and i've learned over the years to travel light! It has made my trips so much more enjoyable. -So what about that awesome Bokeh and shallow depth of field everyone loves about Full Frame? For a travel photographer i've learned that too much bokeh is actually bad! Full frame is great for actual portraits, but realistically HORRIBLE for environmental portraits. When there is too much bokeh you don't see the surroundings therefore missing the point of that travel destination (not telling the story of the image). -Spend all the money to travel to Japan, but can't even see Mt Fuji in the background of the portrait because it is too blurred? Travel to Egypt, but can't tell that's a pyramid in the background because you're shooting at F1.4 in full frame? -I found that even on APS-C I prefer to shoot anywhere from F2.8 to F8 for environmental portraits. -Full frame lenses are $$$! -So full frame cameras was out of the question. APS-C for the win here (in my situation, yours could be quite different). FUJIFILM X-T3 (APS-C): At one point I pretty much settled on this camera. I played with this camera and the dials were just superb and it made shooting not just easy, but very fun (unlike that cheap plastic dial on the a6600). There is something very classic about all the dials on top that made this camera so fun to shoot with. I had used this (borrowed) camera with the Fuji 16-55mm F2.8 and it was sharp, color science was great, shoots at 4K/60, overall better APSC lens selection than sony APSC lenses, higher resolution, 2x SD card slot, higher FPS than Sony, AF-C custom settings, faster shutter speed (1/8000 compared to a6600's 1/4000), bigger AND better electronic viewfinder (EVF), and I can go on and on. So, there was only a few Fuji deal breakers that made me go with the Sony a6600... SONY A6600 (APS-C): In no particular order these are the reasons I ended up with the Sony a6600 in the end: 1. IBIS (in-body image stabilization). 1A. About 30-40% of my photos are at night or in dark places (cities, restaurants, lounges, etc.). When you travel blog you also blog food as well as it goes with the territory. And what are most restaurants like? DARK! IBIS in real life shooting helps me gain anywhere from 1 to sometimes 3 stops of extra light, that is huge. 1B. I shoot a ton of street photography at night, depending on the composition night time just sometimes looks better than day time. 1C. My favorite Sony (or third party) APS-C lenses do not have Image stabilization (Optical SteadyShot): Sony 16-55mm F/2.8 G, Sigma 16mm F/1.4, & Sigma 30mm F/1.4. Yes, full frame would have better low light capability but the trade off isn't worth the much higher cost nor the size for me. 2. Snappier, better autofocus than the X-T3, and eye-AF is just phenomenal. Ok, now you're wondering why an advance hobbyist photographer needs super, duper AF? You're right, I DON'T! But you know who does? The girlfriend who travels with me and knows nothing about cameras. If I want her to take awesome pictures of me I need easy AF to make her life easier so I don't spend wasted time explaining what buttons to push (a problem we ran into several times with the a6000). The AF is just better than the X-T3 for her, although I think both the a6600 and the X-T3 would suit me fine. 3. Smaller form factor. The X-T3 is small enough, but the A6xxx series is just even a step smaller (the body of the X-T3 or even the now X-T4 is pretty much the same size as the Sony a7 III). Again, weight is no problem for me, but fitting things in my small to medium backpack does. Also, the small girlfriend can hold the camera better. 4. Some added pluses that weren't the deciding factor but nice to have: Bigger battery, better grip for my hands, flip up screen. In the end all 3 cameras are amazing and I consider myself lucky to have all these first world problems on which camera to choose from. There is no camera better than the other, but yet there is a camera that will fit your needs better than others. So, find your problems and SOLVE IT! My problems were: 1. Needed IBIS because of all the low light I shoot in. a6600 solved it. 2. Needed a light form factor because I am set on traveling light as a frequent flyer. a6600 solved it. 3. Needed amazing AF so the camera-incompetent GF can use it. a6600 solved it. Your situation could be 180 degrees different than mine! Hope this long book helped! lol.

Autofocus on eye was bad
ILCE-6600 28 January 2020 by Surya20 (USA)
When ive bought this product i was expecting eye focus on video mode very smooth as afc in a6500. I was wrong! Autofocus in this model went so bad even i already put in slow for AF drive speed and standard in AF tracking sensitivity. Could sony make improvements for next firmware updates?

He a6600 is a great camera. The picture quality is excellent. It is very fast compared to earlier Sony DSLR cameras. The new grip with high capacity battery is very ergometric. The 16-55mm f2,8 lens is very sharp and perfect for people and portraits.

Disappointment.
ILCE-6600 24 October 2019 by Nosfeu (USA)
Disappointment. I was waiting for Sony to make 4k 60fps. This camera is functionally the same as the a6500. The rest is marginally better. With this update, it makes no sense.

Fantastic Camera
ILCE-6600 19 September 2019 by ttrace (USA)
For me this camera is amazing. With the kit lens it weighs less than a pound. Took it hiking in Montana and great images, super light, fits in the fanny pack I wear. video is great. Great codecs. Has focus peaking and can put on old Nikon glass with a cheap adapter. really a gem of a camera even though a few years old now. Does not have an audio input, but I have a separate recorder for that. Am looking into the 6400 for audio and log profile.

Why doesn't the camera have a standard MP4?
ILCE-6600 17 September 2019 by 1Disappointed2 (USA)
Have you learned nothing from customer complaints about a6400 video incompatible with social media and mobile device video editing? Why does this camera have only Sony video formats? Do you not understand the common need to quickly upload and share in social media? Social media and mobile devices are not interested in Sony proprietary video formats.
