How to change the location of My Documents folder in Windows XP?

    Changing the default location of the My Documents folder?
    The default location of My Documents is C:\Documents and Settings\(User name)\My Documents.

    Note:
    Some software can only run in default locations.
    Therefore, some software may be unable to run when it’s the target location is changed.

    How to change the default location of the My Documents folder?
    1. Click Start, right-click My Documents and then click Properties.


    2. Click Target in My Documents Properties.


    3. Click Move... in Target folder location.


    4. Select the folder that users want to store the documents in, and then click OK in Select a Destination.
      To create a new folder, click Make New Folder.


    5. Make sure the new location is typed in Target of Target folder location, and then click OK.

      If the specified folder does not exist, click Yes to create a folder in Create Folder.


    6. Click Yes in Move Documents.



      Note:
      If users click No in Move Documents, then the newly added data will not be removed.

      After clicking No, please refer to the steps below to move all data in My Documents to a new location.


      • Remove the data in My Documents one by one from the original location.


      • Restore the default location of the My Documents folder, and then change the location.
        The above operations can only be performed after the users have restored the default location.

    7. The location of the My Documents folder can be designated to a specified folder.

     


    How to restore My Documents to its default location?

    To restore the My Documents folder to its default location (C:\Documents and Settings\(User name)\My Documents), please follow the steps below.
    1. Click Start, right-click My Documents and then click Properties.


    2. Click Target in My Documents Properties.


    3. Click Restore Default in Target folder location, and then click OK.


    4. Click Yes in Move Documents.
