Enter the specific characters (as listed below) in the Instant Message window of Windows Messenger and send. Those inputted specific characters are converted to and shown in emoticons on the screen of a recipient's computer.

To disable the input function of emoticons, follow either of the steps below.
a. In the Tools menu, click Options and in the Personal tab, deselect the Show graphics (emoticons) in instant messages check box.

b. In the Instant messages window, click the Advanced menu and deselect the Show graphics (emoticons) check box.
