Why doesn't the VAIO computer recognize the CD-ROM (or CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM) drive or read the contents of the disc inside?

I can see the CD-ROM (or CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM) drive in My Computer but the system cannot read the contents of the disc inside. Why is that so?

    There are a few possibilities:

    1. If the CD/DVD-ROM drive works for other audio and data CD/DVD, the CD/DVD that was inserted previously may be damaged and therefore unreadable.

    2. The CD/DVD-ROM drive lens may have accumulated some dust and requires cleaning. Please obtain a CD/DVD-ROM drive cleaner from CD/DVD retailers and follow the instructions to clean the CD/DVD-ROM drive.

    3. The driver for the CD/DVD-ROM drive may need to be reinstalled. Follow the steps below to remove and reinstall the CD/DVD-ROM driver.
    a. Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
    b. Double-click the System icon.
    c. Click the Device Manager tab.
    d. Click to select the installed CD/DVD-ROM drive and click Remove.
    e. At the System Properties box, click OK and restart the computer.
Note: The CD/DVD-ROM driver will automatically be reinstalled when the computer starts up.

If the problem still persists, the CD/DVD-ROM drive may be faulty. Please send the machine in for our inspection.
